Sporting events offer another aspect of Beef Empire Days

There are 10 sporting events scheduled to be part of the 2006 Beef Empire Days celebration. From calf roping to cutting and from softball to golf, there are offerings for every interest.

Leading the pack in 2006 is the Hoof it to Health Road Run Races which get underway June 3, at 7:30 a.m. at the Garden City Family YMCA. There will be 5K and 10K events with registration beginning at 6:45 a.m. The Beef Empire Days Tennis Tournament gets underway next at the Grimsley Harmon Tennis Complex for singles, doubles, mixed doubles, men, women and youth. The tournament concludes June 4. Also in the morning June 3, Finnup Park plays host to the Horseshoe Tournament, with qualifying beginning at 9 a.m. Horseshoes long has been a favorite event of the young and older crowd alike, and this tournament will prove to be fun for all involved.

The Garden City Family YMCA also will sponsor the 3-on-3 Basketball Frenzy Tournament June 3 and 4, at noon. All teams are guaranteed three games with T-shirts awarded to the winners in each division. The event takes place at the Finnup Park basketball courts.

Feedlot Team Roping and Sponsors Barrel Race will be held June 4, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Finney County Fairgrounds Arena. Cowboys and cowgirls will compete in Team Roping and Barrel Racing events that are open to any Beef Empire Days sponsor and/or their employees.

The Beef Empire Days PRCA Rodeo kicks off June 8. There will be slack late afternoon and evening June 7, as well as in the morning June 8, with full performances featuring food, queens, chili cook-off contests and a great rodeo in the evening June 8, 9 and 10. The A.G. Edwards Celebrity Team Roping event is always exciting as "legends" in the rodeo arena take on the "younger bucks." This perennial favorite is repeated in Dodge City during the Dodge City Days Rodeo, with the overall winners having year-round bragging rights. The event will be held as part of the June 7, slack activities at the rodeo. Korkow Rodeo Company returns as the stock contractor. Korkow has had stock chosen for the National Finals Rodeo for the past 48 years, and there are only two other rodeo contractors in the nation who can make that claim. This is an excellent opportunity to witness first class professional rodeo with clowns, bull riders and cowboys in Garden City, Kan.

Area youth are the benefactors of the Coors Light/Garden City Recreation Commission Softball Tournament on June 10 and 11, at Garden City's Peebles and Wiley softball complexes. The tournament features men's C-D equalizer divisions and E divisions, plus a women's C-D equalizer division.

Two perennial sporting favorites are scheduled at two of Garden City's finest links. Buffalo Dunes hosts the first four-person golf scramble on June 10, with tee times beginning at 9 a.m. The action moves north to Southwind Country Club June 11, for the 2006 Beef Empire Days Scramble, beginning at 7:30 a.m. Teams can begin reserving tee times at either course May 16. Soft spikes are required at both venues. The High Plains Archery 3D Tournament takes place at the archery range on June 11, at 10 a.m.

A post Beef Empire Days event is the Beef Empire Cutting Horse Competition slated for June 18 and 19 at the Horse Palace on the Finney County Fairgrounds. Competitors from Kansas, Nebraska, Texas and Oklahoma are expected for the weekend competition. Riders will compete in 13 sanctioned classes, and this event provides an excellent opportunity to see the athletes of the equine world cut and control cattle from a herd.
