STAR Bootstraps/BCCD range tour setColorado Livestock producers in Baca, Bent, Las Animas and Prowers counties are invited to participate in a field tour June 10. The STAR Bootstraps group, in cooperation with Baca County Conservation District (BCCD), will examine and discuss ways to maximize rainfall infiltration and use by plants during times of limited rainfall, like we are currently experiencing in southeastern Colorado. Another tour topic will be managing CRP lands to keep animal performance and forage productivity at high levels over the long term. The tour will depart from the Springfield NRCS Office in at 10 a.m. June 10. We will visit native rangeland and CRP sites with different levels of plant cover to assess the effects on soil moisture, plant vigor, and plant productivity. Since this is a producer driven tour, transportation will be by private vehicles, and participants are encouraged to carpool and bring their own lunches and drinks. The Bootstraps organization is a group of producers whose purpose is to investigate for themselves more profitable ways of ranching, by planning their own demonstrations, organizing relevant educational programs, and by sharing their experience with each other. For more information on the June 10th Range Tour contact Tim or Misty at the Springfield NRCS/BCCD office 523-6251 ext. 3. Date: 5/24/06
