Phipps receives Claude Robinson Scholarship

Nebraska

Wravenna Phipps of Kearney, Neb., was named the recipient of the Claude Robinson Scholarship. This $1,000 scholarship is awarded to an outstanding college livestock judging student who exemplifies the characteristics of the late Claude Robinson, an accomplished purebred Yorkshire swine and Angus cattle breeder from Wellsville, Mo. Robinson was a strong advocate of youth and livestock judging programs, and remains highly respected for his desire to improve and evaluate purebred livestock.

Phipps is completing her junior year at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater. Prior to this, she attended Black Hawk College--East Campus (BHE) in Kewanee, Ill. Her individual judging highlights included winning the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) in junior college and the Dixie National Livestock Show in senior college. In junior college, she finished first in oral reasons at the American Royal and tied for first at the NAILE and San Antonio Livestock Show. Phipps was a member of BHE's winning team at the National Barrow Show, American Royal, NAILE, National Western Stock Show and Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. She was ranked first on the All-American Junior College Livestock Judging Team in 2005.

Phipps was an active leader in NJSA, serving on the NJSA Board of Directors from 2003-2005. In addition to serving on the board, she co-chaired the Services Team and was the co-editor of the NJSA's quarterly newsletter, The Pinnacle. She also served as the 2004 Miss American Angus Queen and Ambassador, was a director and officer in the Nebraska Junior Angus Association and received the 2005 Junior Angus Leadership Award. Phipps served as a National Youth Ambassador from 2000-2003 for the Farm Safety 4 Just Kids organization.

"There are many life skills that come to mind when I stop to think about what I have gained through livestock judging," Phipps said. "A hard work ethic, desire, persistence, competitive spirit and a positive attitude are all skills that will benefit me the rest of my life. However, there are two qualities that stick out in my mind--public speaking skills and a passion for the livestock industry."

After completing her bachelor's degree, Phipps plans to pursue a master's degree in public relations or marketing. Someday, she hopes to find herself in a career as a public relations/human resource director for an agricultural-related company or managing her own communications company.

This $1,000 scholarship will be awarded annually to one incoming college sophomore, junior or senior enrolled in a junior or senior college judging program. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated leadership activities, livestock judging experience, livestock judging interest and community service.

For more information, contact the NSR Director of Junior Activities, Jennifer Shike, at the NSR office at 765-463-3594 or via e-mail at jennifer@nationalswine.com. Applications for the 2007 scholarship must be postmarked to the NSR office no later than March 1, 2007.
