OSU's Trapp named associate director of Oklahoma Cooperative Ex

Oklahoma

Oklahoma State University recently selected James N. Trapp to be the new associate director for the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service, effective May 1.

Trapp has been serving as OCES interim associate director since June 13, 2005.

"Dr. Trapp has been performing with distinction in the role of interim associate director, and has been instrumental in developing programmatic and organizational improvements such as the service-oriented Career Ladder promotion system for field staff," said Robert E. Whitson, vice president of OSU agricultural programs and dean and director of the division. "We are very pleased to have Jim as a permanent member of our leadership team."

OSU Cooperative Extension is the state and federally mandated outreach arm of the university's Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. Extension programs focus on increasing opportunities for agricultural enterprises; natural resource and environmental management; food, nutrition, health and safety education; and youth, family and community development.

"I am excited about the opportunity to work with our many Extension educators, specialists and volunteers," Trapp said. "Our personnel work side-by-side with state residents in all 77 counties to help them resolve problems, promote leadership and manage resources wisely."

OCES employs more than 500 county educators, faculty and staff to serve the citizens of Oklahoma.

As associate director, Trapp will provide leadership for the planning and development of statewide extension programs, develop and manage state and federal funds, and work with state commodity groups, legislators, government agencies, community leaders and university officials to ensure OCES programs are addressing issues of importance to Oklahoma.

Trapp earned his bachelor's degree in agricultural economics from Kansas State University in 1969, and master's degrees in agricultural economics from K-State and economics from Michigan State University in 1971 and 1974, respectively.

He joined the OSU faculty in 1976, after earning his doctoral degree in agricultural economics from Michigan State. In 2000, he became department head for the OSU department of agricultural economics.

"Jim brings a broad range of experiences to the position, built during his 25 plus years at OSU; he was chair of the faculty council, has managed a large group of faculty and understands what it takes for an organization to be an educational leader," said Clem Ward, OSU Cooperative Extension economist and professor in the department of agricultural economics.
