Third annual EarthKind rose, Texas Superstar plant sale slated for AprilEarthKind roses, Texas Superstar plants and North Texas Winner's Circle Plants, along with other native and well-adapted plants for North Texas, such as crape myrtles, will go on sale April 29 at the Texas A&M University System Research and Extension Center at Dallas. The third annual sale is sponsored by the Texas Cooperative Extension office in Collin County and the Collin County Master Gardeners. Proceeds benefit horticultural research and educational programs in North Texas. Landry Lockett, horticultural Extension agent for Collin County, said both non-profit organizations help educate the public about making good, environmentally sound choices for appropriate landscaping for North Texas' climate and soil conditions. "Goals are to raise money for research in Collin County and programming, but also, a big part of this is to raise awareness about the EarthkKind roses and Texas Superstar plants and to find a place where the general public can find a wide variety of these plants to purchase," said Lockett. "This may be the largest selection of EarthKind roses and Texas Superstar plants at one location." The sale will be held from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the Pavilion at 17360 Coit Road. The only forms of payment that will be accepted are cash and checks. Shoppers are encouraged to bring their own cart or wagon. Lockett said some wagons will be available for shoppers, but there are always more shoppers than wagons. "In years past the demand and excitement have been so great that we've had a line reaching out the door for as many as 100 people waiting to get in when we open," said Michelle Shook, Collin County Master Gardener and plant sale coordinator. "So this year we're opening early and have purchased many more varieties and quantities to accommodate this growing demand." Shook said Collin County Master Gardeners will be on hand throughout the sale to answer plant and gardening questions. The Collin County Master Gardener cookbook, titled "Sharing Our Best," will also be offered for sale at a price of $12. The cookbook features healthful recipes and gardening tips. For a list of plants that will be available for sale or for more information go to the Collin County Master Gardener website at: www.ccmgatx.org/index.html. For information about specific Texas Superstar plants go to: www.texassuperstar.com. "The fun thing about these plants is that they are Texas tough and have been tested, and every homeowner can have great success with growing them," Lockett said.Date: 3/23/06
