Teen volunteer wins national recognition

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP)--A northwest Missouri teenager who experimented with water-saving farming techniques and donated the extra produce she grew to food pantries has won recognition from a national magazine.

Lindsey Williams, a freshman at Central Methodist University in Fayette, said she was in chemistry class when she learned she had been chosen as one of Teen People's "20 Teens Who Will Change the World."

"I was definitely shocked," said Williams, an 18-year-old from St. Joseph. "I never thought I would get an award like that. But right now, I'm getting ready for midterms. It's kind of off to the side right now."

The honor is one of many Williams has received since she started "Gardening for Families" six years ago before entering seventh grade. She even met former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell because of the program.

"They can give you awards until you're 30, and it's nice for the recognition," Williams said. "But when you see someone's face with produce in their hands, that's more than any award can give you."

So far, the program has produced about 46,000 pounds of vegetables for food pantries. Besides donating vegetables she has grown, Williams has persuaded others to give away their crops.

Her efforts are expected to be featured on CNN in the next few months. She also will be on the "Oprah Winfrey Show," which will likely air in the fall.

Williams' sister Kristi has been helping with the community project for four years.

"How one simple plant from my garden can light people up is amazing," the 17-year-old said.
