Sorghum hybrids to expand farmer support, product line in 2006

Untitled

Monsanto, St. Louis, Mo., recently announced its Asgrow and DEKALB sorghum seed brands will continue their focus on providing the latest elite germplasm and the broadest possible geographic fit for farmers across the U.S. Sorghum Belt.

"The integration of these seed brands into Monsanto Company two years ago, combined with the recent acquisition of NC+ Seeds, Inc., by Monsanto, promises to bring increased resources for research and development," said Jeff Koscelny, U.S. Asgrow/DEKALB Specialty Crops Manager for Monsanto.

DEKALB will introduce a new sorghum product in 2006, DKS36-16, which fits most Plains geographies. This is a medium-to-early product that exhibits good drought tolerance and yield for maturity, excellent staygreen and standability and bronze grain. It is well adapted to the dryland acres of the Plains and is an excellent companion to DKS 37-07.

DKS37-07, which was introduced in 2004 in limited quantities, was very popular in 2005 and demand continues to grow. DKS54-OO and DKS53-11 will also be available in 2006.

DEKALB and Asgrow has plans to eliminate a few hybrids that are close to playing out their life cycles. However, good replacements will be offered. This is just to improve the germplasm available on the market.

Monsanto's U.S. Sorghum Breeding strategy has consolidated four breeding stations into two in Bishop, Texas, and Mt. Hope, Kan. A strong testing and production agronomy program will be maintained in Dumas, Texas.
