The events will begin April 4 at 9:30 a.m. in Goodland at the Sherman County 4-H Building, 417 North Main Avenue. Marci Penner, Explore Kansas, will be the keynote speaker. A bus will leave Goodland at 10:30 a.m. and arrive at the Kuhrt Ranch Hunting Lodge, 12 miles north of Edson. Bryce Cole, Cole Family Farm Corn Maze, and Ken Klemm, Buffalo Guys, will provide informative presentations at the lodge. Lunch will be provided. Following lunch will be a Bed and Breakfast panel providing information on alternative income, experience, and regulations. The Flanders family will give a tour of the ranch. The bus will leave the ranch at 3:45 p.m. and a "What is in Your Back Yard" tour will continue along the Beaver Creek watershed with an informational program on the history of the area. That evening participants will enjoy a meal at the Aberdeen Steak House in Atwood, 503 Main Street, with entertainment from Don Rowlison, Cottonwood Ranch. Jeff and Alice Hill will also provide information on their business that has combined local hunting, history, and food. The bus will return to Goodland following the evening's events. April 5 will begin at 8 a.m. with registration. The second day workshop will be held in Colby at the Prairie Museum of Arts and History, 1905 South Franklin. Workshop breakout sessions will include information on agri-tourism, business structure, business planning, liability, wildlife issues, habitat planning, historical registration, and marketing. Those presenting the breakout session are representatives from Kansas Department of Commerce, Northwest Kansas Travel Council, Small Business Development Center/FHSU, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, Kansas State Historical Society, and local tourism businesses. There will be a lunch provided and a general session following. The event will end at 2 p.m. The workshops and tour event will provide connection of one-on-one mentorship to those interested in tourism and the technical assistance knowledge available from state agencies, federal agencies, local agencies, and private and area organizations and businesses. The intention of the workshops and tour is to develop a partnership of those who are involved in rural tourism and also those who may be interested in areas of agri-tourism, cultural tourism, bed and breakfasts, and pure rural enjoyment businesses that provide a value added effect to their existing businesses. This partnership could enhance each tourism entity through future special events giving exposure to both those inside and outside the area. The goal is to develop a grass roots organization that will work with tourism partners as a benefit to northwest Kansas. This event is sponsored by Farm Credit of Western Kansas, Sunflower Bank, Peoples State Bank, Sherman County Convention Visitors Bureau, Colby Convention Visitors Bureau, Western Prairie RC&D Area, Inc., and Sheridan County Development.
