Norfolk Livestock Market under new ownership
Untitled
NORFOLK, Neb. (AP)--Norfolk Livestock Market Inc., once among the largest livestock auction markets in the world, has been sold to the Jim Barta family of Fremont.
The Emrich family of Norfolk and Don Balfany of Norfolk sold the market in March. The sale ends the Emrich's 71-year association with the market. Otto Emrich and his son C.O. "Ces" Emrich started what was then the Norfolk Norse and Mule Co. in 1935.
General manager Bart Koinzan said the wooden livestock pens and the interior of the main building would be renovated. Plans also include expanding the firms trade territory and the number of sale days, he said.
Norfolk Livestock is on a four-day sale schedule. Koinzan said plans are to return to a six-day schedule--Monday through Saturday.
The firm sells swine, beef and dairy cattle, sheep and horses.
