Nebraska cowboys gather for reunionDescendants of cowboys who came up the Western Trail, often called the Texas Trail in Nebraska, are being sought in connection with a historical marker dedication to be held in Ogallala. On Friday, May 5, descendents of cowboys will be honored at a banquet to be held at the historic Haythorn Land and Cattle Co., established by former trail driver Harry Haythorn in 1884. Featured speaker will be Gary McMahan, cowboy singer and cowboy poet and former world champion yodeler. On Saturday, May 6, Rotary District Governors from Texas north have been invited to accept their state's first Great Western Trail markers with ceremonies at Ogallala's famed old west Front Street. The markers will be presented by representatives of the Vernon, Texas, Rotary Club. Descendants of cowboys who drove cattle from Texas to Nebraska in the 1870s and 1880s will be honored during a Great Western Cattle Trails celebration May 5 and 6. Ogallala was the terminus of the trail drives during that period, resulting in Ogallala being designated as Nebraska's "Cowboy Capital" by the Nebraska State Historical Society. Oklahoma and Texas historians and Rotary Club members began marking the trail in their states and the Rotary Club in Vernon, Texas, has undertaken marking the trail in its entirety from Mexico to Canada. Vernon Rotary Club members will be in Ogallala to help dedicate a marker in Ogallala and to present the first markers to Rotary District Governors from other states along the route. After lunch and entertainment at Front Street, descendants of the trail drivers will help dedicate a Great Western Trail marker at Ogallala's Boot Hill Cemetery. All events are open to the public. Persons knowing of trail driver descendants are asked to contact Ogallala Rotary Club President Don Andrews at P.O. Box 751, Ogallala, NE 69153.Date: 3/23/06
