Moisture helps some areasTemperatures were below average across the state during the week ending March 19 with good levels of precipitation reported, according to the Colorado Agricultural Statistics Service, March 20. The snow received at the end of the week raised precipitation levels above the average for the week. The precipitation was widely dispersed across much of the Front Range. With the much needed moisture, producers were only allowed an average 4.7 days suitable for fieldwork. Overall, topsoil moisture is now rated at 28 percent very short, 49 percent short, 20 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies are rated at 24 percent very short, 39 percent short, 35 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Topsoil and subsoil conditions have improved from the previous week. Winter Wheat is rated in mostly good to fair condition with 10 percent of the crop being pastured. Dry onions are now at 16 percent planted which is slightly ahead of the 12 percent reported last year and the five-year average of 13 percent. The spring barley crop was 12 percent seeded by week's end which is slightly ahead of last year and the five-year average of 13 and 11 percent, respectively. Pasture and range feed conditions are now rated at 9 percent very poor, 23 percent poor, 41 percent fair, and 27 percent good. Death losses for cattle and sheep were rated average for the week. Cows calved reached 47 percent last week which is slightly behind last years pace of 48 percent. Ewes lambed, currently reported at 34 percent, were ahead of last years pace of 32 percent by week's end.Date: 3/23/06
