West Plains regional sales

Untitled

The Ozarks Regional Stockyard, West Plains, Mo., reported receipts of 5,726 head June 20, compared to 5,978 head last week and 4,825 head last year, according to the USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo.

Compared to last week, steers weighing 400 to 500 pounds and heifers weighing 400 to 600 pounds sold $1 to $3 lower, steers over 500 pounds and heifers over 600 pounds were firm to mostly $2 higher. The limited test on light and feather weights under 400 pounds showed they sold $3 to $5 lower. The supply was moderate to heavy. Demand was uneven, good to very good on heavier calves and yearlings, at best moderate on lighter weights. Several larger bunches or strings of value enhanced cattle in the offering, either by being all natural or source verified, however, the bell ringer was the string of 200 or more head, 600- to 680-pound black-hided, source-verified steer calves. Order buyers of light and feather weights gave some indication that currently hot weather, high heat and high humidity were the culprits for the lower lighter calf market. The feeder supply consisted of 52% steers and 48% heifers, with nearly 60% over 600 pounds.
