Nearly 300 supporters of the Kansas Agriculture and Rural Leadership Program (KARL) helped further the cause of rural leadership enhancement during the Old West Fest benefit June 3 in Dodge City.

The proceeds generated a gross income exceeding $40,000 according to local volunteer event coordinators Phil Gjerstad, Gjerstad Cattle Company and KARL alumnus Holly Martin, editor of the High Plains Journal.

The group included area business leaders, KARL alumni, current class members and board members. The evening of fun, food and entertainment was held at the Santa Fe Depot in Dodge City.

"The benefit was a way to extend thanks to scores of donors for the non-profit leadership organization and to renew that support for the second year of the Class VIII training experience," said Jack Lindquist, KARL president.

The evening began at 5:30 p.m. with social time, casino games and a silent auction. Dinner, with beef provided by Cargill, Dodge City, followed at 6:30 p.m. Other major social and dinner support was provided by Western Beverage. The evening ended with a live auction, Lindquist said.

KARL is an intensive two-year study and training program for emerging leaders of the agricultural industry and rural communities of Kansas. Class members' two-year training includes 10 in-state seminars, a national study tour to Washington, D.C. and a 12-day international study tour.

Information about the KARL program, including support or application for the Class IX (2007-2009), is available by visiting the website www.karlprogram.com, or calling 785-532-6300.
