Great Western Beef Expo completes 37th year

The 37th Annual Great Western Beef Expo concluded on May 26, with approximately 35 people attending the awards program in Sterling, Colo. This year's guest speaker was Ced Woodard, regional sales manager for Intervet. Woodard spoke on "Using Nutrition, Animal Health and Genetics to Maximize The Value of your Animals."

The 210 head of test cattle posted a strong average daily gain (ADG), Lb. Feed/Lb. Gain (feed efficiency) and Cost of Feed/Lb. Gain for the 2005/2006 test year. As a group, the 210 cattle ended the 156-day test with an average daily gain of 3.93 pounds, 5.27 pounds of feed per pound of gain and a $0.39 cost of feed per pound of gain.

Champion in Lb. Feed/Lb. Carcass Gain (feed efficiency) was a set of Belgian Blue sired steers from Everett Segelke, Brush, Colo.; this set of steers had a feed efficiency of one pound of carcass gain per 5.81 pounds of feed. Reserve Champion honors went to the French Charolais Ranch, Mullen, Neb., with a set of Charolais sired steers out of FCR Legacy 3018. This set of steers posted a feed efficiency of 1:6.23.

Third through 10th included: Coleman Limousin Ranch, Charlo, Mont., Limousin, 1:6.28; Hunt Limousin Ranch, Oxford, Neb., Limousin, 1:6.43; Haglund Ranch, Brockway, Mont., Gelbvieh, 1:6.57; Lickdab Ranch, Genoa, Colo., Saler, 1:6.60; Hunt Limousin Ranch, Oxford, Neb., Limousin, 1:6.63; Coleman Limousin Ranch, Charlo, Mont., Limousin, 1:6.76; Sidwell Hay & Cattle, Gill, Colo., Maine-Anjou, 1:6.82; and Donald Brophy, Eckley, Colo., Angus X Charolais, 1:6.88.

Champion honors in Average Daily Carcass Gain (ADCG) went to Guenzi Cattle, LLC, Sterling, Colo. This set of Angus sired steers out of GAR Pre-Destined posted an ADCG of 3.340 pounds. Reserve Champion went to Aristocrat Angus Ranch, Platteville, Colo., with a set of Angus steers sired by AAR ET Equator L220. This set of steers posted an ADCG of 3.231.

Third through 10th included: Haglund Ranch, Brockway, Mont., Gelbvieh, 3.180; TC Ranch, Akron, Colo., Angus, 3.114; Coleman Limousin Ranch, Charlo, Mont., Limousin, 3.113; Donald Brophy, Eckley, Colo., Angus X Charolais, 3.063; Burgess Ranches, Eckert, Colo., South Devon, 3.058; Aristocrat Angus Ranch, Platteville, Colo., Angus, 3.057; DeBruycker Charolais, Dutton, Mont., Charolais, 3.017; and Donald Brophy, Eckley, Colo., Angus X Charolais, 3.014.

Champion honors in Carcass Price/Lb. went to the Dusty Prairie Ranch, Bartley, Neb., Amerifax sired steers. The Champion pen was sired by DPR Super J and received a contest only Carcass Price/Lb. of $1.2718. Reserve Champion honors went to George Rober, Sedgwick, Colo., with a pen of Simmental sired steers from a 600-U son. This pen received a contest only Carcass Price/Lb. of $1.2627.

Third through 10th places included: Schurrtop Angus & Charolais, Farnam, Neb., Charolais, $1.2533; Schurrtop Angus & Charolais, Farnam, Neb., Angus, $1.2500; X7 Ranch, Merino, Colo., Red Angus, $1.2378; Donald Brophy, Eckley, Colo., Angus X Charolais, $1.2376; D&B Cattle, Merino, Colo., Charolais, $1.2319; Lake View Piedmontese, Piedmontese, $1.2284; Schurrtop Angus & Charolais, Farnam, Neb., Charolais, $1.2253; and DeBruycker Charolais, Dutton, Mont., Charolais, $1.2252. Ties are broken by the average marbling score for the pen.

With the near record prices in the fall of 2005 and the declining market this spring the net return for most of the cooperators was not very profitable this year.
