Weed management course available

Kansas

With the 2006 Kansas Wheat crop in the bin, producers are now reflecting on the weed challenges of the past crop, and considering post-harvest weed control strategies leading to preparations for the 2007 crop.

"Scouting this time of year is crucial for good weed control. A late flush of weeds can cause real problems for weed management next year", said Kendall Hodgson, a Little River Wheat producer and President of the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers. And, he said, "Making sure that you catch late season weeds before they have a chance to set seed is essential."

The chairman of the Kansas Wheat Commission, Tom Morton, who farms near Oxford in Sumner County, said, "Also this time of year you have lots of options. You can mow, till, or use a wide range of herbicides."

Recognizing how important effective, integrated weed management is, the National Association of Wheat Growers has developed the Wheat Weed Resistance Management Course, available online at the NAWG website, www.wheatworld.org/WRMC/.

The Wheat Weed Resistance Management Course is a self-paced tool that growers can use in the convenience of their homes. The course is completely free to everyone, and takes about an hour to complete.

Wheat industry leaders are saying that this is also the time of year that growers may want to consider consulting with Certified Crop Advisors, industry representatives or with their extension agents concerning weed problems experienced over the past year. The Wheat WRMC also provides a number of links to resources that can provide more detailed and farm-specific information.

As Morton commented, "Good stewardship at this time of year really pays dividends."
