Texas celebrates National Farmers Market WeekTexas Texas Agriculture Commissioner Susan Combs today proclaimed Aug. 6 to 12 "Farmers Market Week in Texas," part of National Farmers Market Week announced in Washington by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns. "The vitality of small- and medium-sized farms across Texas is good for local economies, good for consumers and good for Texans," Combs said. "Farmers markets deserve all the recognition they can get, their venues are great fun for families and their work directly benefits local producers." Visitors to Texas' more than 97 certified farmers markets will find local growers selling a variety of fruits, vegetables, breads, cheeses, prepared foods, pecans, honey, plants, flowers and other Texas-grown products straight from the field or the greenhouse. Many farmers markets now also showcase musical talent and have children's activities. The popularity and success of farmers markets are not just a Texas phenomenon. Because of the growing consumer interest in obtaining fresh products directly from the farm, the number of farmers markets in the United States has grown dramatically in recent years, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture reports more than 3,700 farmers markets in the United States. The Texas Department of Agriculture's Pick Texas website (www.picktexas.com) is the best way to explore the diversity of Texas' farmers markets. Visit the site to access a directory of local certified farmers markets and pick-your-own farms. You can find the farmers market closest to you and see a schedule of when it is open for business. You can also discover the diversity of crops produced in Texas, find out where they are grown and learn how to select the best and freshest that Texas agriculture has to offer. Date: 7/27/06
