Rio Grande Valley sugar growers provide scholarship endowment to benefit minorities

Texas

A $40,000 endowed scholarship to benefit minorities and economically disadvantaged students in Cameron, Hidalgo and Willacy counties has been established at the Texas A&M Foundation. The scholarship is funded by the Rio Grande Valley Sugar Growers Inc.

"We understand the value and importance of a college education, but we know that such a dream is often out of reach for some Valley students," said Steve Bearden, sugar association president and chief executive officer. "The Rio Grande Valley Sugar Growers Inc. Foundation Excellence Award will help more students reach their full potential."

The scholarship will fund full-time students at Texas A&M University-College Station who are in good standing and pursuing a degree in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Bearden said.

"A well-educated workforce is crucial to the future of Valley agriculture and for our region's continued prosperity and growth," Bearden said.

In addition to the endowed scholarship, the association's board of directors approved a one-time, four-year $8,000 student scholarship to be awarded beginning this fall.

The Texas A&M Foundation Excellence Award program was established in 1999 and helps the university recruit and retain outstanding, under-represented students. Students and families may learn more about the program at http://giving.tamu.edu/content/content.php?FoundationExcellenceAward.

The Rio Grande Valley Sugar Growers Inc. is a member-owned cooperative of 125 farmers from Hidalgo, Cameron and Willacy counties.
