North Plains Research Field Day set for Aug. 9Texas An information-packed field day offering something for most agriculture producers is scheduled Aug. 9 at the North Plains Research Field southeast of Etter, said Dr. John Sweeten, Texas Agricultural Experiment Station resident director in Amarillo. The program begins at 8 a.m. with registration. Field tours will run from 8:30 to 11:45 a.m., followed by a luncheon, said Thomas Marek, research engineer and North Plains Research Field superintendent. Guest speakers during the sponsored lunch will be State Rep. David Swinford, who will give a legislative update, and Dr. Steve Amosson, Texas Cooperative Extension economist, who will provide an outlook on energy expectations and irrigation considerations. Experiment Station and Extension personnel will discuss cotton, alternative crops, wheat, corn, irrigation, forage production and dust control at confined animal feeding operations during the morning field tour. This past season's processing statistics from Moore County Gin will be highlighted, giving producers a glance at how rapidly cotton is being adopted in the area in place of corn acreage, Marek said. Also, new local oil processing facilities will be discussed for producers considering sunflower and guar production contracts. The tour also will include an update on efforts concerning variable-rate irrigation and plans for the new center-pivot system and drip-irrigation facilities, he said. Producers can get three continuing education units, one in integrated pest management and two in general. Certified Crop Advisor credits also will be offered. For more information, contact a local county Extension agent. ------CUTLINE------ The newest center-pivot irrigation system to be soon fitted with patented variable-rate nozzles will be one of the tour stops at the North Plains Research Field on Aug. 9.
