Last call- Nebraska Beef Council seeks director candidatesNebraska Beef producers, time is running out to request your candidate signature petition if you would like to be involved firsthand with Nebraska beef checkoff investments. Nebraska Beef Council Board of Director elections will take place in four out of the nine Nebraska Beef Council districts. Nebraska Beef Council directors volunteer their time to represent beef producers' checkoff investments on the state and national level. A director's major responsibility is to oversee checkoff expenditures by determining promotional and marketing programs for checkoff investments. The first step to becoming a Nebraska Beef Council Director is meeting the candidate qualifications. A director must be 21 years of age or older, a registered voter and a Nebraska beef producer. After meeting the qualifications, a possible candidate must obtain 100 beef-producer signatures from their district on a candidate petition. Candidate petitions are available at the Nebraska Beef Council office and must be completed and returned to the office by Sept. 1, 2006. After receiving completed petitions, elections will take place in November in which ballots are mailed to all beef producers in the respective district, asking them to vote for the producer they want to represent them on the Nebraska Beef Council Board of Directors. Winners will be announced in December, 2006. Terms for newly elected directors begin Jan. 1, 2007. Sallie Atkins, Executive Director of NBC, encourages anyone interested in becoming a beef council director to visit with a current or past director to discover the challenges and rewards involved in serving the beef industry in such a valuable capacity. It's also helpful to attend the Nebraska Beef Council meetings and witness firsthand how the checkoff process works. Districts 2, 4, 6 and 8 are up for elections. District 2 is open as the director has completed two terms. Directors in Districts 4, 6, and 8 are eligible to run again. "Being a director is a serious commitment", Atkins added. "We need dedicated, knowledgeable producers to provide leadership in an ever-changing, dynamic industry. As producers, we need to do all we can to keep the beef industry viable for generations to come."
