Wyobraska cattle sales notes

The combined sales volume of Wyoming, western Nebraska, and western North and South Dakota auctions for the week ending Jan. 21, totaled 6,500 head, compared to 17,000 head last week and 12,900 head last year, according to the USDA Market News Service, Torrington, Wyo.

Compared to last wee, feeder cattle sold $3 higher. Demand was very good. Not enough comparable direct feeder cattle sales for a good price comparison, few comparable sales steady to $2 higher. Direct trade was slow. Demand was moderate to good. Buyer inquiry and offerings were moderate. Most feedlots reported to be near full. Unless otherwise noted direct prices are current FOB with a 2 to 3% shrink or equivalent and with a 5 to 10 cent slide on calves and 3 to 6 cents slide on yearlings from base weight. Steers made up 62% of the supply, heifers 38% with 54% weighing over 600 pounds. Direct sales accounted for 1575 head of the total receipts.
