Weather dictates hay sales

In Nebraska and the East River area of South Dakota, hay sales were steady with light to moderate trade activity and demand. Pellet sales were steady, with moderate to good demand and trade activity, according to the USDA-Market News Service, Jan. 20. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Northeast: Premium alfalfa, in large squares: $120-$140; good, in large squares: $95-$110, in large rounds: $55-$60; fair, in large squares: $65-$75, in large rounds: $40, ground and delivered: $68-$75. Good grass hay, in small squares: $80-$85; good, in large rounds: $45-$60. Dehydrated alfalfa pellets, 17% protein: $126-$131.

Platte Valley: Supreme alfalfa, in small squares: $150; premium, in large squares: $120-$140; good, in large squares: $100-$115; fair/good, in large squares: $85-$105; premium, in large rounds: $95; good, in large rounds: $60-$70; fair, in large rounds: $40. Good grass, in large squares: $70-$80, in large rounds: $50-$60; fair, in large rounds: $35-$45, ground and delivered: $75-$80. Dehydrated alfalfa pellets, 17% protein: $120-$122.

In Iowa, hay sales trended steady. Demand and trade continues light to moderate. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

South central/north central: Premium alfalfa, in large and small squares: $100-$120; good, in large and small squares: $100, in large rounds: $65-$85; fair, in large squares: $75, in large rounds: $48-$50. Good/premium alfalfa-grass mix, in small squares: $110-$120. Good/premium grass, in large squares: $65-$95. Corn stalks: $20/bale.

Rock Valley: Premium alfalfa, in small squares: $95-$100; good, in small squares: $67.50-$87.50, in large squares: $62.50-$70, in large rounds: $62.50-$75; fair, in small squares: $50-$57.50, in large squares: $55-$60. Good alfalfa mix, in small squares: $82.50, in large squares: $62.50, in large rounds: $65; fair: $52.50. Good grass, in small squares: $85-$95, in large squares: $70-$82.50, in large rounds: $62.50-$70; fair, in small squares: $52.50, in large squares: $55-$60; utility: $40-$42.50; utility: $42.50-$47.50. Straw, in small squares: $2.10-$2.20/bale, in large squares: $22/bale, in large rounds: $25-$27.50/bale.

In Minnesota, all classes of hay sold mostly steady on a large supply. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Good alfalfa mix, in large squares: $62.50, in large rounds: $65-$75; fair: $55; utility: $37.50-$42.50. Good grass, in small squares: $65-$67.50, in large rounds: $62.50-$70; fair: $52.50-$60; fair: $50-$57.50; utility: $32.50; utility: $32.50-$47.50. Straw, in small squares: $1.80-$2.00/bale, in large squares: $17/bale, in large rounds: $13-$23/bale. Cornstalks, in large squares: $14/bale, in large rounds: $13/bale.

In Montana, the hay trade was slow to moderate. Demand moderate at best. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Premium alfalfa, in small squares: $100-$120; good, in small squares: $75-$85, in large squares: $60-$70; fair/good, in large rounds and squares: $50-$55. Utility, in large squares and rounds: $40-$50. Premium alfalfa-grass mix, in small squares: $100-$120; fair/good, in small squares: $65-$70; fair/good, in large squares: $55-$60. Premium grass, in small squares: $90-$95; good, in small squares: $80-$85. Premium timothy, in small squares: $140-$145. Premium timothy-mixed grass hay: $110. Straw: $25

In Wyoming, western Nebraska and western South Dakota, the hay trade activity is slow to moderate with prices steady. Demand moderate to good. Supplies are light for dairy and horse hay, adequate for cow and grinder hay. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Eastern Wyoming: Supreme alfalfa: $90-$100; premium: $75-$85; good: $60-$75; fair : $40-$55. Utility: $30-$35, ground and delivered: $66-$71. Alfalfa-orchard for horses: $145. Alfalfa-timothy: $140. Timothy: $140. Dehydrated alfalfa pellets, 17% protein: $125.

Central/western Wyoming: Supreme alfalfa: $100; premium: $80-$90; good: $60-$75; fair: $55-$60. Alfalfa-grass: $60-$70. Oat hay: $50-$65. Mixed grass: $60. Alfalfa cubes: $90.

Western Nebraska: Horse alfalfa, in small squares: $100; supreme: $90-$95; premium: $75-$85; good: $60-$70; fair: $45-$55; utility: $35-$45, ground and delivered: $67-$78. Oat hay: $50. Millet hay: $50. Wheat straw: $25-$30. Corn stalks: $25-$30. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 13% protein, less than five ton: $135, 5-12 ton: $115, over 12 ton: $105.

Western South Dakota: Premium alfalfa: $75-$90; good: $60-$75; fair: $45-$60. Premium alfalfa-grass: $80-$90; good: $60-$75. Mixed grass: $45-$60. Millet hay: $50.

In Colorado, hay prices are steady with slow movement. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Northeast: Supreme alfalfa, in large squares: $115-$125; good, in large squares: $80-$85; utility/fair, in large squares: $60-$65, ground and delivered: $80.

Northwest/mountain areas: Premium timothy, in small squares: $120-$125, in rounds: $110.

San Luis Valley: Supreme alfalfa, in large squares: $115; premium, in small squares: $120. Premium alfalfa-grass mixed, in small squares: $135. Good oat hay, in large squares: $70.

In Missouri, the hay supply and demand is moderate, prices are steady. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Supreme alfalfa: $120-$145; premium: $90-$125; fair/good, in rounds: $30-$80, in small and large squares and baleage: $70-$110. Good mixed alfalfa-grass, in small squares: $2.50-$3.50/bale, in large rounds: $25-$50/bale. Fair/good prairie hay: $40-$60. Good/premium brome, in large squares: $90-$100. Good brome: $40-$70. Fair brome, some mixed with grass, in rounds: $15-$30/bale. Good timothy, in small squares: $3-$4.50/bale. Good red clover: $25-$50. Good mixed grass, in rounds: $20-$35/bale. Fair fescue, in large rounds: $15-$25/bale. Wheat hay: $40-$60. Wheat straw, in small squares: $2.50-$3.50/bale.

In Oklahoma, alfalfa hay movement is active and prices are steady to higher. Grass hay movement is active and prices are steady. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Central/western: Premium alfalfa, in large squares: $120-$140, in small squares: $120-$140; good, in large squares: $100-$120, in small squares: $100-$120, in large rounds: $90-$100; fair, in large squares: $80-$90, in large rounds: $70-$80.

Central/eastern: Wheat hay, in large rounds: $30-$40. Premium grass, in large squares: $70-$80, in small squares; $70-$80, in large rounds: $60-$70; good, in small squares: $65-$75, in large rounds: $50-$60; fair: $40-$50.

Panhandle/western feedlot area: Good grinding alfalfa, in the field or bale pile: $80-$90, ground and delivered: $110-$120.

In Texas, the hay trade activity is light to moderate. Demand continues good to very good. Hay supplies limited on all classes of hay and pellets. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Panhandle: Supreme alfalfa, in small squares: $170-$185; premium, in small squares: $160-$170; good, in small squares: $145-$160; fair, in small squares: $140-$150; supreme, in large squares: $175-$200; premium, in large squares: $160-$185; good, in large squares: $140-$160; fair, in large squares: $120-$130, ground and delivered, north: $110-$112, south: $115-$125. Alfalfa-wheat mix, in large squares: $120-$125, in small rounds: $115. Coastal bermuda, in small squares: $5.75-$6.50/bale, in large rounds: $85-$110. Prairie hay, in small squares: $175-$180, in large squares: $135. Brome grass, in small squares: $150. Oat hay, in large squares: $110.
