TradeWind Energy signs agreement to sell wind power to Sunflower Electric

Kansas

TradeWind Energy, LLC, a Lenexa, Kan.-based wind power project development company, announced Dec. 13 that it entered into an agreement with Sunflower Electric Power Corporation to provide 50.4 megawatts (MW) of wind capacity under a 20 year power supply contract.

The power will be supplied by the Smoky Hills project located 25 miles west of Salina, just north of Interstate 70 on the Ellsworth/Lincoln County border. When completed, Smoky Hills will have a total capacity of 250 MW. The project will be built in multiple phases with the first 100 MW phase expected to be completed by the end of 2007.

The 100 MW, phase I project will produce enough energy to power approximately 45,000 Kansas homes and will provide significant economic benefits to the local area, including the creation of approximately 100 jobs during construction and up to eight full time jobs during operation. In addition, experience from similar wind projects indicates that there is the potential for strong local spending during both the construction and operations phases of the project.

Situated along Interstate 70, Smoky Hills Wind Farm holds the promise of becoming an education and tourism attraction. Some 22,000 cars a day will drive past the project and see wind generated electricity in action as they traverse the state.

"We are extremely pleased to announce that this project will soon become a reality, and we applaud the leadership shown by Sunflower Electric for its commitment to wind power and the Smoky Hills project" said Rob Freeman, CEO of TradeWind Energy. "This project is going forward because of the economic and environmental contributions it will make to Sunflower Electric's system. This is a great day for the local community, the utility customers that will benefit from the project, and the State of Kansas."

TradeWind has been developing projects in Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, and other Midwestern States since 2001. The company focuses on utility-scale sites characterized by excellent wind potential, interconnection access and deliverability to utility customers.
