Ranching for Profitability meeting series set for Jan. 15 to 19

Nebraska

State and nationally known experts will share information about current issues and topics important to ranch management and beef production during the Ranching for Profitability meeting series across western and central Nebraska in January.

The meetings are hosted by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension. Dates and locations are as follows:

--Jan. 15: Kimball, Event Center;

--Jan. 16: Overton, Community Building;

--Jan. 17: Broken Bow, City Auditorium;

--Jan. 18: Bassett, Methodist Church;

--Jan. 19: Valentine, Peppermill Restaurant.

The program will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude at 3:30 p.m. local time. This year, Dr. Harlan Hughes, Professor Emeritus, North Dakota State University, who writes a monthly cattle economics article in BEEF Magazine, will speak in the morning on a topic entitled "What Profitable Ranches Do." In the afternoon, Dr. Hughes will present a program entitled "Using Current Market Information to Plan and Make Decisions."

Dr. Ivan Rush, UNL Extension beef specialist from the Panhandle Research and Extension Center, will bring perspective on the beef industry with a presentation entitled "The Last 25 Years--Foundations and Fads." Rush was recently awarded the Industry Service Award by the Nebraska Cattlemen and will bring excellent insights from his wealth of experience.

Rick Funston, UNL Extension beef reproductive physiologist from the West Central Research and Extension Center at North Platte, will present a program entitled "Heifer Development and Supplementation." This will be a timely topic as many producers are currently looking for cost-effective ways to develop replacement heifers with the rising cost of harvested feed.

Pre-registration is requested at the UNL Extension county office hosting the meeting one week prior for a meal count. The Ranching for Profitability meeting series is sponsored by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension and Pfizer Animal Health with generous support from local sponsors.

For more information or to register for one of the meetings, contact the UNL Extension county office hosting the meeting.
