West Plains regional cattle sales

The Ozarks Regional Stockyard, West Plains, Mo., reported receipts of 3,450 head Aug. 22, compared to 3,239 head last week and 3,350 head last year, according to the USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo.

Compared to last week, light steer calves under 450 pounds and heifers under 400 pounds were $2 to $5 higher, steers over 450 pounds sold $1 to $3 higher, with most advance on 500 to 650 pounds. Heifers over 400 pounds were steady to $2 higher, although weights over 700 pounds were not well tested. The supply was moderate, both quality and flesh conditions, in most cases, not as attractive as last week. Demand was good, continuing best on better quality, uniform lots of weaned calves having received 1 to 2 rounds and most all yearling cattle. Cattle feeders and backgrounders, currently in the market, continue showing a bullish side and obviously feel comfortable with the market remaining fairly stout or perhaps just nervously hoping. The supply consisted of 58% steers, 4% bulls and 47% heifers, with nearly 47% over 600 pounds.
