Strong demand for quality hay

In Kansas the hay trade is moderate to active. Demand strong for dairy and grinding alfalfa, alfalfa pellets, brome, prairie hay and stock cow quality hay and moderate for grass mulch, according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Aug. 22. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Southwest:

Dairy/grinding alfalfa steady. Movement active. Horse alfalfa, in small squares, $160-$200; supreme dairy, $130-$155; premium, $125-$140. Utility/good grinding alfalfa, in the field, $120-$140, some shipped in hay, $115-$125. Ground and delivered, $140-$145, a little $155, some ground on the truck, $135-$150. For the week ending Aug. 12, 15,268 tons of grinding alfalfa and 2,592 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered. Good sudan, in large squares, $100 or $110 delivered. CRP grass, in large squares, $75 or $85 delivered. Corn for silage, $19-25/ton standing (65-68% moisture).

South central:

Dairy/grinding alfalfa and alfalfa pellets steady. Movement moderate to active. Dairy alfalfa, supreme, $125-$155; premium, $115-$125; stock cow, no test, $110-$125. Utility/good grinding alfalfa, in the field, $100-$120, instances, $130-$140. Ground and delivered, $120-$135. For the week ending Aug. 12, 4,868 tons of grinding alfalfa and 1,345 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 15% and 17% protein, $140-$148; dehydrated, 17% protein, $170. Straw, in large squares, $50. CRP grass, in large squares, $70-$75. Sudan, good, in medium squares, $80-$82.50. Soybean hay, good, in large squares, $70-$90.

Southeast:

Alfalfa, brome and prairie hay steady. Movement moderate to active. Alfalfa, horse and goat, in medium squares, $130-$145. Dairy alfalfa, supreme, $120-$150; premium, $110-$120; good, $90-$110. Bluestem, in small squares, good, $85-$100, mostly, $95; in medium and large squares, $80-$100, mostly, $85, some, $110-$120; in large rounds, $75-$90. Brome, supply tight, good, in small squares, $90-$100; in medium and large squares, $80-$100. Good soybean hay, in large squares, $90-$100, an instance, $110.

Northwest:

Dairy/grinding alfalfa steady. Movement moderate. Alfalfa, horse, $150-$180. Dairy, some, $120-$130 no test; premium, $110-$120; good, $110; stock cow, $110-$115 no test. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, in the field, $90-$105, shipped in, $100-$110. Ground and delivered, $110-$130. Oat hay, in medium squares, $100; in large rounds, $80. Kochia, in large rounds, $85.

North central-northeast:

Dairy/grinding alfalfa, prairie hay and brome steady. Movement moderate to active. Alfalfa, horse, supreme, $150-$160; premium, $130-$135; good, $125. Dairy, supreme, $110-$140; premium, $100-120; good, $90-$110. Utility/good grinding alfalfa, in the field, $85-$105, some shipped in, $105-$115 delivered; ground on truck, $95-$120. Bluestem grass, in small squares, horse quality, $100; good, $75-$90; in medium squares, $80-$85; in large rounds, $65-$80. Brome, supply tight, premium, in small squares, $90-110; good, in small squares, $80-$90; in medium squares, $80-$90; in large rounds, $65-$90. Straw, in small squares, $2.50/bale or $3/bale delivered; in medium squares, $45-$55, some $60 delivered. Soybean hay, good, in large squares, $90-$100.
