South Devon juniors 'Follow the Yellow Brick Road' to Valley Fa

Members of the North American South Devon Junior Association followed the yellow brick road to Valley Falls, Kan., for the fifth annual Junior National Show and Leadership Conference June 15 to 17 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.

Leadership activities began with a salesmanship contest, testing the sales and communication skills of junior and senior members. The champion junior salesmanship group consisted of: Lane Giess, Pierz, Minn.; Zack Langley, Denison, Kan.; Blake Komis, Avon, Minn., and Michael Jahn, Kerkhoven, Minn. Champion senior group winners were: Jordan Vander Molen, Sully, Iowa; Jill McClenathan, Brooklyn, Iowa, and Niki Koscielniak, Hillman, Minn.

A quiz bowl contest followed with three divisions of contestants. Champion Pee Wee honors were awarded to Kevin Edwards, Fairmount, Ga. The junior quiz bowl trophy went to Kyle Zimmerman, Holton, Kan., and Boone Hawley; Milaca, Minn., took home the senior honors.

Judge Harry Moser, Wheaton, Kan., selected TRM JCW HS SBCC 3D 221R, a Feb. 21, 2005 daughter of HS TRM M80, shown by Kayla Edwards, Fairmount, Ga., as the grand champion South Devon heifer. KNN Rubee Dancer 25R, a May 19, 2005 daughter of DLCC Aggression 111M, shown by Paige Nelson, Bay City, Wis., took home reserve honors.

The Grand Champion Percentage Female trophy went to Kevin Edwards, Fairmount, Ga., on his entry of BS 16, a Nov. 14, 2005 daughter of JP Magic 94M. Brandon Van Wyk, Grinnell, Iowa, won the reserve ribbon with Hill Crest Rachel, a March 10, 2005 daughter of WM 115L.

New junior member Taylor Ohlde, Easton, Kan., won Grand Champion Steer with his entry of SBCC 5422, a March 2, 2005 son of Connealy Front Page 0228. Reserve Champion Steer honors went to TLC Easy Rock Dash, an April 12, 2005, son of DLCC Easy Rock 33H, shown by Paige Nelson, Bay City, Wis.

Garrett Steinlicht, Valley Falls, Kan., won the Grand Champion Bred and Owned division with his entry of HS JCW Country Girl 38R, a March 8, 2005 daughter of HS TRM M80. Lane Giess, Pierz, Minn., won the reserve honor with DLCC Sweet Enuf 61R, an April 11, 2005 daughter of MJB North Star 191N.

The Grand Champion Cow/Calf Pair trophy went to Kyle Zimmerman, Holton, Kan., with his entry of TRM HS SBCC Double Image, a Feb. 2, 2003 daughter of DLCC Black Enuf 127J. Garret Steinlicht, Valley Falls, Kan., received the reserve ribbon with HS JCW Lady Monarch, an April 14, 2003 daughter of Mum Maker 103L.

2006 showmanship winners included: Pee-Wee: Champion, Brandon Van Wyk, Grinnell, Iowa. Reserve, Lauren Terry, Winchester, Kan. Junior: Champion, Kayla Edwards, Fairmount, Ga. Reserve, Taylor Ohlde, Easton, Kan. Intermediate: Champion, Kyle Zimmerman, Holton, Kan. Reserve, Paige Nelson, Bay City, Wis. Senior: Champion, Nicole Koscielniak, Hillman, Minn. Reserve: Jill McClenathan, Brooklyn, Iowa.

The 2006 Premier Exhibitor award went to Lane Giess, Pierz, Minn. Premier Breeder honors went to BS Cattle Co., Brad & Judy Stephens, Holton, Kan. Boone Hawley, Milaca, Minn; Abe Fick, Ellsworth, Wis; Brianna Jahn, Kerkhoven, Minn., and Paige Nelson, Bay City, Wis., were the top four selected to compete for the 2006 Outstanding Junior Herdsman. The final vote by the 2006 junior national participants selected Boone Hawley as the outstanding herdsman.

New this year was the competition for the golden pitchfork. A competitive group of juniors from each state found themselves in the top three positions. Wisconsin took first, with Minnesota and Iowa following with second and third place.

The 2007 North American South Devon Junior National will be held June 27 to 30 at the University of Wyoming, Laramie, Wyo.
