RMFU to host small wind workshop

Rocky Mountain Farmers Union Cooperative Development Center will host a series of three small wind workshops in the three-state area of Kansas, Colorado and Wyoming, Sept. 6 and 7. The workshops will cover those interested in 1 kilowatt residential systems that provide electricity for a home, all the way to 100 kilowatt systems that produce electricity for larger farms and businesses.

"The purpose of these workshops is to help participants assess whether or not a particular system makes sense for them, to provide information on small wind energy manufacturers, and to explore cooperative purchasing arrangements to lower costs," said RMFU Cooperative Development Center Renewable Energy Director Tony Frank.

Each workshop will include a financial analysis of how a 50 kilowatt wind system would supply an actual farm or other business, as well as a turbine demonstration from one of the wind turbine vendors. RMFU is looking at discounted pricing from a cooperative purchase, installation and maintenance of wind systems.

The workshops will be held as follows:

--Sept. 6: Atwood, Kan., Rawlins County Fairgrounds (north of Atwood); 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.;

--Sept. 7: Holyoke, Colo., Peerless Theater, 212 S. Interocean Ave., 8 a.m. to noon;

--Sept. 7: Cheyenne, Wyo., Laramie County Community College, 1400 E. College Dr.; 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

RMFU's Cooperative Development Center works with groups of agricultural producers wishing to establish member-owned cooperatives. The center provides education, project planning, and start-up services, such as training, legal counsel, and policy development to these groups. RMFU receives funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development.
