Newell sheep sales report

St. Onge Livestock Co., Ltd., Newell Sheep Yards, Newell, S.D., reported receipts of 3,823 head Aug. 17, compared to 1,808 head two weeks ago and 4,365 head last year, according to the USDA Market News Service, Sioux Falls, S.D.

Compared to two weeks ago, feeder lambs under 70 pounds sold $2 to $4 higher, over 70 pounds were steady to weak, with instances of $2 lower on 90- to 100-pounds. Slaughter ewes sold mostly $2 higher. Buyer demand was good on all classes with a good attendance. Sectors of the trade area receiving some scattered moisture lately. The offering included 85% feeder lambs, 9% slaughter ewes, 6% slaughter lambs, with the balance being mostly miscellaneous sheep and goats.

Slaughter lambs: Wooled, Choice and Prime 2 to 3, 123 to 129 lbs., 88.75 to 89.25 (88.84); 18 head, 149 lbs., 88.75.

Slaughter ewes: Good 2 to 3, 42 head, 178 lbs., 21.00. Good 2 to 4, 201 to 206 lbs., 20.00 to 20.25 (20.07). Utility 1 to 2, 109 head, 153 lbs., 21.75. Cull 1, 79 head, 136 lbs, 16.75.

Feeder lambs: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 105 head, 58 lbs., 113.75; 61 to 68 lbs., 113.25 to 116.25 (114.89); 72 to 79 lbs., 108.25 to 112.00 (111.16); 81 to 89 lbs., 102.50 to 110.00 (106.82); 90 to 95 lbs., 101.00 to 106.50 (104.98); 186 head, 100 lbs., 100.50; 111 to 119 lbs., 89.00 to 91.75 (89.80). Medium and large frame 2, 63 to 66 lbs., 107.00 to 110.50 (108.80); 56 head, 76 lbs., 105.75; 80 to 87 lbs., 94.25 to 100.00 (97.90); 69 head, 99 lbs., 99.50; 20 head, 102 lbs., 92.00. Medium and large frame 3, 51 head, 52 lbs., 105.50. Small frame 1 to 2, 68 to 69 lbs., 70.50 to 86.00 (74.15).

Buck lambs: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 48 head, 90 lbs., 88.50 per cwt.

Replacement ewes: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 37 head, 165 lbs., 2 to 4 years old 100.00 per head; 18 head, 183 lbs., 4 to s.s. old 72.50 per head; 90 head, 169 lbs., aged, 48.00 per head.
