Authorities find Prewitt man who admitted to taking cattleTroy Elkins entered his plea in February as part of an agreement offered by District Attorney Karl Gillson. A sentencing hearing was scheduled for April 13, but Elkins didn't show. After being tracked down by state livestock investigators, Gillson said April 17 that Elkins was being held in the county jail without bond. Before scheduling another sentencing hearing, Gillson said state District Judge Grant Foutz wants prosecutors and defense attorneys to brief him on whether state law allows a person to be sentenced for one count of livestock theft no matter the number of cows taken. Elkins admitted to taking several head of cattle March 19, 2005 from a government corral west of McGaffey in McKinley County. He was accused of trying to sell them for about $400 each. Date: 4/20/06
