Remuda award availableFor there to be good cowboys and cowgirls in New Mexico or anywhere else, there has got to be good horseflesh for them to ride, says New Mexico Cattle Growers' Association president Bill Sauble, Maxwell. "The New Mexico Quarter Horse Association and the NMCGA have made it their business since 2000 to recognize ranchers in New Mexico that excel in the production of those good horses with New Mexico's Best Remuda Award," Sauble explains. "A remuda is a group of working horses bred by the ranch specifically to work and pen cattle." Nominations for New Mexico's 2006 Best Remuda Award are now open and will close April 24, he reports. For consideration a remuda must be made up of registered Quarter Horses and the nominee must own a minimum of five AQHA registered mares to produce ranch horses. Nominees must be members of NMCGA, NMQHA, AQHA and the National Cattlemen's Beef Association. Nominations will be accepted from any NMCGA or NMQHA member. Nomination forms can be obtained by contacting the NMCGA at 505-247-0584 or via e-mail at nmcga@nmagricutlure.org. The Best Remuda Award winner will be selected b a committee made up of NMCGA and NMQHA members and the winner will be honored by the NMQHA at their annual meeting this fall and the NMCGA at the Joint Stockmen's Convention in Albuquerque in December, Sauble said.
