Just a scoop fullA good young pair is still in strong demand with 2-year-old pairs bringing $1,475 to $1,550 per pair this past week. Light calves are very strong in demand selling bull calves off first calf heifers weighing 200 pounds for $400 per head . Their sisters weighing 225 pounds brought $375 per head and their brothers weighing 279 pounds brought $500 per head. Feeder cattle movement is about half the size that it has been for quite some time. Most cattlemen selling feeders or fats are somewhere between disgusted and disappointed. However to have outguessed the market this year--you would need to have been a weather forecaster that was accurate or have a direct line to God. Unfortunately I didn't have either. Remember the reason that we celebrate Easter. God allowed his Son to be nailed to a cross. I ask myself--would I have been willing to do the same or would I have chosen a less painful way? In Church they took the spikes and pounded through the wood during the service. It was very quiet with each strike of the hammer giving us only a small glimpse of that day. But that wasn't the end of the story yet, only a new beginning. Editor's note: Jerry Nine, Woodward, Okla., is a lifetime cattleman who grew up on his family's ranch near Laverne, Okla. Date: 4/19/06
