HOT training at Hill CityThe K-State Research and Extension offices in Ellis, Decatur, Gove, Graham, Norton, Trego and Sheridan counties will be offering the Hazardous Occupation Training or Tractor and Farm Safety Course. This is for youth 13 to 15 years of age, who will be doing farm work, for pay, for someone other than their parents. Federal law under the Fair Labor Standards Act does not require youth 14 to 15 years of age who will be working for their parents to take the course, but all other youth are required to complete the Hazardous Occupation Training. This is a very basic course that is designed by child labor laws to allow youngsters under 16 years of age the opportunity to work on farms. The course will cover basic farm and machinery safety and machine maintenance. The course will be held Saturday, May 6 at the fairgrounds in Hill City, Kansas. Class will start at 8 a.m. A pre-registration fee of $12 is due by May 1, to your local Extension office. This includes lunch, refreshment breaks and student manual. Employers who plan to hire youth must realize that they cannot hire youth under 16 years of age without those youth taking this safety course. To register contact the Trego 785-743-6361, Ellis 628-9430, Gove 938-4480, Norton 877-5755, Graham 421-3411, Sheridan 675-3268 and Decatur County Extension offices 475-8121 by May 1. Students date of birth and social security number are necessary when pre-registering. Date: 4/18/06
