2,300 pigs burn inside central Iowa hog confinementDozens of firefighters from nine fire departments rushed to the ISO Pork facility but could only save one of the four interconnected buildings, officials said. "We just couldn't do anything with it," said Bradford Fire Chief Bruce Gorder, noting that wind gusts hampered the effort. The fire was reported at 12:40 p.m. and firefighters were still on the scene early in the evening. Franklin County Sheriff Larry Ritchsmeier said the fire was likely caused by a malfunction in a machine designed to clean the facility. About 1,350 sows and 1,000 baby pigs were killed, but Ritchsmeier said the death toll could rise due to smoke inhalation suffered by other hogs. No other injuries were reported. Authorities who responded include fire departments from Bradford, Iowa Falls, Alden, Ackley, Dows, Coulter, Latimer, Buckeye and Hampton. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources, American Red Cross and Franklin General Ambulance also responded. Date: 4/18/06
