Former Ak-Sar-Ben president named to UNL Block and Bridle Hall of FameSherman Berg, former Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben Foundation president of Blair, Neb., will be honored as a new member of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Block and Bridle Hall of Fame. Berg will be honored at the Block and Bridle Club and animal science department's annual honors banquet at 6:30 p.m. April 21 at the Nebraska East Union on UNL's East Campus. Banquet tickets cost $16 and can be purchased by contacting Nancy Savery at 402-472-6440, e-mail nsavery1@unl.edu. A reception for the Berg family will precede the banquet at 5:30 p.m. The club's annual hall of fame honor goes to people who have made significant contributions to Nebraska agriculture through leadership, service, youth projects and community activities. Berg joined Ak-Sar-Ben in 1982 as director of agricultural programs, became president in 1998 and retired as president in 2005. He continues to serve as foundation consultant. During his 40 years of service to the livestock industry, Berg has been a champion for youth interested in pursuing agricultural careers and remaining in Nebraska. During his tenure, he directly impacted more than 30,000 youth who participated in Ak-Sar-Ben 4-H Youth Livestock Exposition programs. Berg developed Ak-Sar-Ben's Catch-a-Calf program, a mentoring program that pairs a member of the Omaha business community with each of the youth involved. This effort has helped narrow the urban and rural divide in the state and resulted in many scholarship awards to 4-Hers by their mentors. He also was instrumental in developing the Purple Ribbon Auction that garners scholarship funds for youth programs. Berg is one of the founders of River City Roundup, a regional celebration of agricultural and western heritage. His professional experience includes 18 years with the American Shorthorn Association as junior activities director and editor. He also has served as president of the Livestock Publications Council, the Omaha Agribusiness Club, the North American Livestock Show and Rodeo Managers Association, and the Nebraska 4-H Foundation. Berg is a member of the Downtown Kiwanis Club, the Omaha Sports Commission Executive Committee, the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce Ag Committee and the Omaha Agribusiness Club. He and his wife, Cindy, have three children and four grandchildren. Other awards presented at the banquet will include animal science department scholarships and student awards in the Block and Bridle. Judging teams also are honored. The animal science department is part of the university's Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Date: 4/19/06
