Wheat planting underwayKansas Higher temperatures and scattered showers throughout the state during the week ending Sept. 18 allowed producers 5.3 days suitable for fieldwork, with Wheat planting, alfalfa cutting, and corn harvesting the main activities, according to the Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service, Sept. 19. As much as 5 inches of rainfall were reported in the eastern third of the State. Topsoil moisture was rated 3 percent very short, 17 percent short, 77 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 9 percent very short, 29 percent short, and 62 percent adequate. Ninety-eight percent of the corn is in the dent stage, the same as last year and the five-year average. Seventy-six percent of the corn is mature, compared to 73 percent last year and 82 percent for the five-year average. Thirty percent of the corn has been harvested, 9 points ahead of last year but 8 points behind the five-year average. Corn condition is rated 4 percent very poor, 14 percent poor, 42 percent fair, 37 percent good, and 3 percent excellent. Ninety-eight percent of the corn is in the dent stage, the same as last year and the five-year average. Soybean condition is rated 2 percent very poor, 11 percent poor, 41 percent fair, 40 percent good, and 6 percent excellent. Eighty-five percent of the sorghum is in the coloring stage, compared to 76 percent last year and 86 percent for the five-year average. Thirty percent of the sorghum is mature, compared to 24 percent last year and 46 percent for the five-year average. Nine percent of the sorghum has been harvested, compared to 6 percent last year and 21 percent for the five-year average. Sorghum condition is rated 3 percent very poor, 12 percent poor, 40 percent fair, 40 percent good, and 5 percent excellent. Ninety-three percent of the cotton is setting bolls, compared to 97 percent last year and 99 percent for the five-year average. Twenty-one percent of the cotton is in the bolls open stage, compared with 32 percent last year and 29 percent for the 5- year average. Cotton condition is rated 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 41 percent fair, 45 percent good, and 9 percent excellent. Pasture and range conditions are rated 6 percent very poor, 15 percent poor, 42 percent fair, 35 percent good, and 2 percent excellent. Feed grain supplies are rated 2 percent very short, 8 percent short, 84 percent adequate, and 6 percent surplus. Hay and forage supplies are rated 2 percent very short, 7 percent short, 84 percent adequate, and 7 percent surplus. Stock water supplies are rated 2 percent very short, 10 percent short, and 88 percent adequate. Date: 9/20/05
