Two-day class shows new GIS softwareWestern Kansas More than two million people are using Global Information System Technology to improve the way their businesses and organizations locate and identify customers, as well as evaluate opportunities, and Garden City Community College is now offering a short-term course to provide local and area residents with the same opportunity. The course, covering ARCView software, will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 29, plus 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 30, sponsored by the GCCC Business and Industry Institute. The cost is $199 per person, with information or registration available at b&i@gcccks.edu or 620-275-3279. The course is already partly filled, and enrollment is limited to capacity. "GIS has quickly evolved into a technology that can help people plan, design, engineer, build and maintain information infrastructures that improve everyday life, and the way they do business" said Kent Kolbeck, instructor. "ARCView coordinates with GPS technology and allows you to easily visualize, manage, create and analyze geographic data." Primary topics and techniques in the two-day course include leveraging geographic data to make better decisions, viewing and analyzing spatial data and building geographic data sets quickly and easily. Other aspects range from creation of publication-quality maps to management of files, databases and Internet data resources from a single application. Those who attend will also learn how to customize the user interface around specific tasks. Kolbeck has been trained by ESRI, the leading U.S. GIS software manufacturer, and has already provided extensive training to John Deere customers and others, using Precision Farming software. "This seminar should be valuable for people who are already using ARCView software," said Institute Director Norma Jean Dodge, "and for those who would like to learn more before purchasing it."
