Strong demand for alfalfaIn Kansas the hay trade is moderate to active. Demand strong for dairy alfalfa, alfalfa pellets and stock cow quality alfalfa and grass hay, good for prairie hay and brome moderate for grinding alfalfa and grass mulch, according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Sept. 16. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted. Southwest: Dairy/grinding alfalfa steady to firm. Movement active. Horse alfalfa, in small squares: $100-$150, in medium squares: $115-$120; supreme dairy: $100-$115; premium: $90-$105; good: $72-$100; fair: $70-$85. Utility/fairy grinding alfalfa, in the field: $50-$60, ground and delivered: $72-$85. For the week ending Sept. 10, 12,227 tons of grinding alfalfa and 1,189 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered. Oat hay, in large squares: $72.50. South central: Dairy/grinding alfalfa and alfalfa pellets steady to firm. Movement active. Horse alfalfa, in small squares: $130-$135, in large squares: $110; supreme dairy: $100-$120; premium: $90-$100; good: $75-$90; fair: $70-$80. Utility/fairy grinding alfalfa, in the field: $40-$45. Utility: $30, ground and delivered: $60-$75. For the week ending Sept. 10, 4,892 tons of grinding alfalfa and 1,681 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 15% protein: $92-$100; dehydrated, 17% protein: $125-$128. Southeast: Alfalfa, brome and prairie hay steady. Movement active. Horse and goat alfalfa, in small and medium squares: $100-$115; supreme dairy: $100-$120; premium: $95-$105; good: $80-$90; fair: $80.
