Rolf, Smith honored with awards of excellenceThe North American Junior Limousin Association honored Megan Rolf of LeRoy, Kan., and Shelby Smith, Stephenville, Texas, with its Award of Excellence during the 2005 National Junior Limousin Show and Congress, July 17 to 23 in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Eighteen years ago, at age 3, Rolf began her Limousin business when her parents--Walter and Jackie Rolf--bought her three bucket calves. Since then, Rolf has reinvested her profits and grown her herd to 25 head of Limousin cattle. She also has been involved extensively in NALJA. She has attended the NJLSC since 1994 and currently serves as NALJA secretary. "My goal is to strive to maintain and improve my herd after college," Rolf said, "and I plan to hold a job in the beef industry or beef research." Rolf is a senior in animal sciences and industry at Kansas State University. In January, she will attend either Iowa State University or the University of Missouri-Columbia to pursue her master's degree in bovine genetics. "She is well deserving of the Award of Excellence," said Dan Moser, associate professor of animal sciences and industry at KSU. "Megan has always been willing to go beyond what is required to achieve success." Recently retiring from the NALJA Board of Directors, Smith served as the 2004 NALJA ambassador and the 2004-2005 NALJA secretary. "Although I had been showing pigs since I was 8 years old, I had always dreamed of going on to bigger and better things--cattle," Smith said of her start in the Limousin business. "Looking back, I am glad we got involved with such a great breed of cattle and people." The daughter of Johnny and Alysa Smith and a senior at Texas A&M University, Smith is majoring in agricultural development. She plans to pursue a career in agricultural policy, public relations, marketing or sales. "Shelby is a very driven person who has excelled in everything she has tried," said Joe Townsend, associate dean of agriculture at TAMU. "She exemplifies those characteristics and qualities that are sought in the leaders of tomorrow." Limousin is the leader in muscle-growth efficiency and is the ideal complement to British-based cows.
