West Plains cattle sale news

The Ozarks Regional Stockyard, West Plains, Mo., reported receipts of 4,000 head Oct. 18, compared to 3,634 head last week and 5,076 head last year, according to the USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo.

Compared to last week, steers 400 to 550 pounds were $2 to $4 lower, over 550 pounds were steady to $2 lower. Several lightweight steer calves under 400 pounds were strong, and at times sold $3 to $5 higher. Heifers were steady to $2 lower, with the exception of 550 to 600 pound heifer calves were $3 to $6 lower. Most pressure on fleshly offerings, especially heavier calves. The supply was moderate. Demand was unevenly moderate to good, but much narrower on lesser quality and fat bawlers. Buyers about as particular and picky on calves, as they've been so far this fall, yet not so on yearling cattle as they continue to remain in a tight supply. The supply consisted of 50% steers with nearly 25% weighing over 600 pounds.
