Sugar beet harvest one week behind average pace

Temperatures were above normal across the entire state during the week ending Oct. 23, while precipitation was below normal except in some south-central areas, according to the Wyoming Agricultural Statistics Service, Oct. 24.

As of Oct. 23, 56 percent of the state had adequate topsoil moisture and 3 percent was surplus, down 1 point from last week. Supplies continued to be significantly better than the last five years.

An average of 6.2 days were suitable for field work. Winter Wheat crop condition was unchanged with 60 percent rated good. The sugarbeet harvest was 49 percent complete, about 5 days behind last year and about 7 days behind average. Sugar beets condition was unchanged from last week at 85 percent good and 15 percent fair.

Corn condition was down slightly with 12 percent rated excellent and 63 percent good. Corn was mature on 89 percent of the acreage, a little behind average but still ahead of last year. The corn harvest was complete on 30 percent of the acreage, also a little behind average but ahead of last year.

Eighty-nine percent of the dry beans were combined, about a week behind average but 9 days ahead of last year. The third cutting of alfalfa was 87 percent complete, 3 points ahead of last year but 5 points behind average.

Range and pasture feed was rated good or excellent in 54 percent of the state, up 7 points from last week and well ahead of last year's 16 percent and the five-year average of 12 percent. Hay and roughage supplies were rated adequate in 69 percent of the state and surplus in 29 percent of the state, much better than last year when 76 percent was rated adequate and 2 percent surplus. Sixty-eight percent of cattle were moved from summer ranges, and 88 percent of sheep were moved. Over 90 percent of the calves and lambs were rated in good or excellent condition.
