Springfield livestock market report

The Springfield Livestock Marketing Center, Springfield, Mo., reported receipts of 3,100 head Oct. 19, compared to 3,300 head last week and 2,975 head last year, according to the USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo.

Compared to last week, steer calves under 550 pounds sold steady to $1 lower with those weighing from 550 to 650 pounds selling $2 to $4 lower. Heifer calves under 650 pounds traded steady to $3 higher. A light offering of yearling feeders and calves over 650 pounds sold fully steady. All weights of Holstein steers were $2 to $5 higher. Calf demand was very good, despite heavy numbers of calves currently hitting the markets across the Midwest and reports of high sickness and death loss rates in the high plains feedlots and backgrounding yards. The supply included 44% steers, 35% heifers, 13% Holsteins, and 8% feeder bulls. Around 27% of the cattle weighed over 600 pounds.
