Showers slow harvest in some areasKansas Producers averaged 4.4 days suitable for fieldwork statewide during the week ending Oct. 23, and scattered showers slowed harvest progress in some areas. Major activities included Wheat planting and row crop harvesting. Topsoil moisture was rated 3 percent very short, 19 percent short, 74 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 9 percent very short, 32 percent short, 58 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. Ninety-one percent of the Wheat has been planted, compared to 87 percent last year and 90 percent for the five-year average. Seventy-four percent of the Wheat has emerged, compared to 68 percent last year and 67 percent for the five-year average. Wheat condition was rated at 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 32 percent fair, 53 percent good, and 10 percent excellent. Eighty-five percent of the corn has been harvested, 5 points ahead of last year but 5 points behind the five-year average. Seventy-two percent of the soybeans have been harvested, 1 point ahead of last year but the same as the five-year average. Ninety percent of the sorghum is mature, compared to 89 percent last year and 91 percent for the five-year average. Fifty-six percent of the sorghum has been harvested, compared to 42 percent last year and 63 percent for the five-year average. Sorghum condition is rated 3 percent very poor, 11 percent poor, 40 percent fair, 40 percent good, and 6 percent excellent. Eighty-five percent of the corn has been harvested, 5 points ahead of last year but 5 points behind the five-year average. Hay and forage supplies are rated 5 percent short, 85 percent adequate, and 10 percent surplus. Stock water supplies are rated 4 percent very short, 13 percent short, 81 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Some cattle are being moved off grass to crop residue. Date: 10/27/05
