Dr. Bhimangouda S. Patil has received the Karnataka State Rajyotsava Award for "outstanding contributions to the state and country." He is director of Texas A&M University's Vegetable and Fruit Improvement Center.
Patil, a native of the southern India state of Karnataka, was cited for his work with "foods for health" in agricultural sciences and for enhancing international graduate education.
The annual award marks the Nov. 1 birth of the Karnataka government in 1955. It is presented to professionals in literature, music, dance, theater, journalism, sports, medicine, education, agriculture and information technology.
Patil graduated from the University of Agricultural Sciences in Dharwad in 1986. He did advanced degrees at Texas A&M, earning his doctorate in 1991. His research has focused on the health benefits of citrus.
He also is credited with orchestrating a memorandum of understanding between Texas A&M and Karnataka's University of Agricultural Sciences in Dharwad for the exchange of students and faculty and to advance scientific knowledge.
