Wheat nearly all headed out

Kansas

statewide, there were 5.6 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending May 22, and it was a dry week throughout much of the state, with scattered showers generally confined to the eastern third of the state, according to the Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service, May 23.

Topsoil moisture was rated 14 percent very short, 28 percent short, 54 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 8 percent very short, 28 percent short, 62 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus.

Ninety-two percent of the Wheat is headed, 5 points behind last year and 1 point behind the five-year average. Wheat condition is rated 5 percent very poor, 15 percent poor, 37 percent fair, 36 percent good, and 7 percent excellent. Reports indicate that hot, dry conditions are stressing Wheat fields. Stripe rust continues to be a concern. Disease reports indicate 44 percent with no presence, 30 percent with light presence, 20 percent with moderate presence, and 6 percent with severe presence. Insect reports indicate 74 percent with no infestation, 21 percent with light infestation, 4 percent with moderate infestation, and 1 percent with severe infestation.

Seventy-seven percent of the corn has emerged, compared with 75 percent last year and 80 percent for the five-year average. Fifty-one percent of soybeans have been planted, 5 points ahead of last year and 1 point ahead of the five-year average. Twenty-three percent of the soybeans have emerged, 4 points ahead of last year but 5 points behind the five-year average. Twenty-five percent of sorghum has been planted, compared with 29 percent last year and 33 percent for the five-year average. Eight percent of the sorghum has emerged, 5 points behind last year and 8 points behind the five-year average.

Pasture and range conditions are rated 2 percent very poor, 12 percent poor, 37 percent fair, 44 percent good, and 5 percent excellent. Feed grain supplies are rated 2 percent very short, 5 percent short, 89 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus. Hay and forage supplies are rated 1 percent very short, 6 percent short, 83 percent adequate, and 10 percent surplus. Stock water supplies are rated 3 percent very short, 12 percent short, 82 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus.
