Some farmers able to resume planting
Minnesota
Despite the rain that started the week ending May 22, warmer weather over the weekend advanced crop emergence and development, according to the Minnesota Agricultural Statistics Service, May 23.
Some farmers were able to resume planting toward the end of the week. Farmers need the drier conditions to continue to complete this year's plantings.
The average temperature for the week was 57.3 degrees, 0.4 degree below normal. Statewide topsoil moisture supplies as of May 20 were rated 0 percent very short, 1 percent short, 71 percent adequate, and 28 percent surplus.
An estimated 66 percent of spring Wheat acreage has emerged as of May 22, compared with 75 percent for the same date in 2004 and 65 percent for the five-year average.
Oats were 75 percent emerged compared with 81 percent a year ago and 76 percent for the five-year average. Barley was 63 percent emerged, the same as last year and two percentage points ahead of the five-year average.
Corn was 92 percent planted, compared with 99 percent in 2004 and 94 percent for the five year average. Corn was 38 percent emerged compared with 59 percent for the five-year average.
Soybeans were 37 percent planted versus 81 percent last year and 67 percent for the five-year average. Soybeans were 6 percent emerged compared with 20 percent for the five-year average.
