Risk and Profit conference slated Aug. 11, 12 in Manhattan

Kansas

The 2005 Kansas State University Risk and Profit Conference will be held Aug. 11 and 12 in Manhattan at the K-State Alumni Center.

The conference, 'Economics Makes You Money,' will feature presentations on numerous key topics including Extension marketing specialist James Mintert's economic outlook for the livestock industry.

Comedian Mark Mayfield will entertain attendees at the Thursday evening banquet. Mayfield is a motivational speaker who was raised on a farm and graduated magna cum laude with two degrees from K-State.

"Our department has always been involved in economic issues that affect agriculture. But farming decisions are becoming ever more crucial and we want to provide producers with information that helps give them an edge," said Terry Kastens, agricultural economist with K- State Research and Extension and conference coordinator.

A highlight of the program every year is the unveiling of the results of an informal producer survey conducted at the conference. The survey reveals farmers' thoughts on business goals, government programs and the future of farming.

The fee for the conference is $160, if paid in advance, and $185 at the door. The fee includes several meals and a copy of the conference proceedings. Group discounts are available at $140 per person for groups of four or more paying with one check. For more information, interested persons can call the K-State Extension Department of Agricultural Economics at 785-532-1504 or 785-532-5823. Details will be posted at www.agmanager.info (click on events) as they become available.
