New superintendent selected at NMSU livestock research center
New Mexico
Nathan Elam has been named the new superintendent of New Mexico State University's Clayton Livestock Research Center. He will also serve as an assistant professor in NMSU's animal and range sciences department.
"My focus will be on health of receiving cattle," he said. "It's an area of research that continues to gain attention, especially with the advent of a national identification program. Having cattle that are healthy and able to perform as soon as they arrive is of paramount importance."
The receiving period is generally considered those first few weeks new calves arrive in the feedlot. It's a highly stressful time for the young steers that can lead to weight loss and health problems.
"We'll also be looking closely at applied feedlot nutrition and finishing studies that would have direct application to industry related needs," he said.
A native of Pauls Valley, Okla., Elam is a member of the American Society of Animal Science. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in animal science from Oklahoma State University. Elam holds a doctorate in animal science from Texas Tech University, and completed post-doctorate research in digestive physiology at the University of Kentucky.
The Clayton center is widely recognized as one of the nation's leading facilities for receiving cattle research.
Located six miles east of Clayton on Highway 56, the center contains 48 research pens and a feed mill. The center, which was created in the 1970s, is also home to the New Mexico Ranch-to-Rail Program. Ranch-to-Rail tracks cattle from the feedlot to the packing plant so that producers can learn more about how their cattle and management fit the industry.
Over the years, NMSU scientists have also conducted research on irrigated pastures and native grasslands, including grazing and stocking densities on locoweed-infested pastures.
