NMSU to host state FFA convention June 6 to 9

New Mexico

FFA members and visitors from across the state will gather for contests, workshops, elections and awards during the State FFA Convention June 6-9 at New Mexico State University.

An estimated 1,000 FFA members and supporters will attend the convention, titled "What's Right with You," a theme based on a National Geographic video that will be viewed during the opening ceremony.

"The convention is the highlight of the year," said Les Purcella, state FFA supervisor. "It's a combination of everything FFA members worked for all year."

The convention schedule includes 10 contests such as job interview and public speaking. Author and broadcaster Andrew McCrae will give the keynote speech, and national FFA officers will present workshops. In addition to winning honors in the convention contests, many students will accept scholarships and awards for projects and record books completed throughout the year.

"Members gain a lot of self motivation and leadership training. This is the premier career-oriented activity that we do for the young people," Purcella said.

New Mexico has 6,000 agricultural education students, more than 4,000 of whom belong to FFA. Members participate in community service projects, competitions and leadership events that prepare them for more than 300 careers related to agriculture.
