Mediation can help producers, creditors resolve issuesKansas High fuel prices are putting an extra strain on agricultural producers, but help is available for farmers, as well as bankers and creditors through the Kansas Agricultural Mediation Service, also known as KAMS. "During difficult times, people tend to withdraw and try to handle things on their own," said Char Henton, KAMS mediation coordinator. "It's sometimes difficult to talk to someone else about legal and financial problems, but there is expertise available that can help sort out some of the problems." The program is voluntary, confidential and allows for a neutral third party to help those in conflict identify issues, options and possible solutions, said Forrest Buhler, KAMS staff attorney. "Through an agreement with Kansas Legal Services, Inc., we are able to provide legal representation to Kansas farmers and ranchers on a reduced-fee basis, depending on the individual's income level," Buhler said. Anyone involved in an agricultural enterprise, be it farming, ranching, agri-business or an agricultural lender, can call KAMS at its toll-free number (1-800-321-3276). KAMS is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and administered by K-State Research and Extension. Date: 5/26/05
