McAlester stockyards report

The McAlester Union Stockyards, McAlester, Okla., reported receipts of 1,600 head May 24, compared to 1,900 head last week, according to the USDA Market News Service, Oklahoma City, Okla.

Compared to last week, lightweight stocker cattle were steady, the balance of cattle were steady to $2 lower. Weather concerns and the cattle on feed report were beginning to put pressure on area markets. There was a good attendance of buyers and trade was active on upper-tier cattle, moderate on the balance. Quality was plain to average, with very few attractive cattle on hand. Receipts were comprised of 38% steers, 46% heifers with 20% feeder cattle over 600 pounds. Feeder bulls made up 17% of the sale. Slaughter cows and bulls were steady. Good attendance of buyers. Good demand continues for long bred cows and average to good for pairs. A total of 275 cows and bulls sold with 45% going to packers.

Boners, 65 head, 80 to 85% lean, 1000 to 1475 lbs., 59.00 to 62.50; high dressing, 62.75 to 67.00; low dressing, 55.00 to 58.50. Lean, 35 head, 85 to 90% lean, 1000 to 1250 lbs., 56.00 to 59.00; low dressing, 52.00 to 55.50. Light, 15 head, 85 to 90% lean, 600 to 950 lbs., 47.50 to 51.50; high dressing, 55.00 to 60.50; low dressing, 40.50 to 44.50.

Slaughter bulls: Yield grade 1 and 2, 22 head, 1275 to 1975 lbs., 73.00 to 76.50; high dressing, 77.00 to 82.00; low dressing, 68.50 to 72.50.

Replacement cows: Medium and large frame 1, 3 to 6 years old, 975 to 1300 lbs., 6 to 9 months bred, average quality blacks, 780.00 to 880.00.

Pairs: Medium and large frame 1, 3 to 6 years old, 800 to 1025 lbs., with 100- to 220-lb. calves average quality blacks, 965.00 to 1065.00; 8+ years old, 900 to 1325 lbs., with 175- to 375-lb. calves, average quality blacks, 935.00 to 960.00.
